The event\, titled “Clark County’s Remarkable Women to Remember\,” will take place on Monday\, October 21\, 2024\, at the Clark County Historical Museum (1511 Main Street\, Vancouver\, WA 98660). Doors open at 5:15 p.m.\, and the presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. \nDuring this engaging presentation\, Pat Jollota will shine a spotlight on notable figures such as Mother Joseph\, Esther Short\, and Mary Schofield\, among many others who have played pivotal roles in the history and development of our community. With her extensive knowledge and compelling storytelling style\, Pat will bring to life the remarkable contributions of these women and their lasting impact on Clark County. \nWhen one thinks of history in Clark County the first person who comes to mind is Pat Jollota. Pat has devoted decades of her life to gathering\, saving\, and sharing the stories of Vancouver\, Washington\, and Clark County. \nPat Jollota is synonymous with local history in Vancouver. Since moving to the area in 1982\, she has dedicated herself to preserving and sharing the rich stories of our past. Her work at the Clark County Historical Museum\, combined with her prolific authorship—including the popular Naming Clark County—has solidified her as a key figure in our historical narrative. \nSince then\, Pat’s authorship of local history has been prolific\, writing Darkness Next Door\, Downtown Vancouver\, Camas\, Legendary Locals of Vancouver\, Vanishing Vancouver\, The Murder of Joanne Dewey in Vancouver\, Washington\, and Haunted Vancouver Washington. Pat Jollota’s story is one of a historian who has made history while saving and sharing it. \nThis event is sponsored by the Clark County Historic Museum. Tickets are $15 and are limited. SUMMARY:Liberty Factory: A Look at the Kaiser Shipyards
DESCRIPTION:The Clark County Historical Museum (CCHM) welcomes author and maritime journalist\, Peter Marsh\, to the Speaker Series program with his presentation\, “Liberty Factory: A Look at the Kaiser Shipyards\,” on Thursday\, July 11\, 2024\, at 7:00 pm. This presentation will occur at the Clark County Historical Museum (1511 Main Street\, Vancouver\, WA 98660.) \nIn this talk\, Peter Marsh will describe the amazing history of Henry Kaiser’s WWII Oregon shipyards and their impact on the ports and populations of the lower Columbia River from 1940 to 1945. \nPeter Marsh was born and raised in Greenwich in SE London–the home of 0 degrees longitude and GMT. He has lived in the USA for over 50 years and began building and sailing a 20’ micro cruiser in Portland in 1981. After sailing from Olympia to Glacier Bay and back twice in 1982 and 1988\, he began reporting about yachts and commercial craft on the lower Columbia River for the Freshwater News boating paper. In the 1990s\, he became acquainted with Larry Barber\, the last marine editor of the Oregonian\, who continued writing about the local baiting scene after he retired. \nBarber had been the leading reporter covering WWII ship building in Portland\, especially the achievements of Henry Kaiser’s three emergency shipyards. He reprised some of these stories for the boating paper\, most notably the exploits of the Kaiser yard in St. Johns in North Portland that launched 334 Liberty ships in four years. He called the story “Liberty Ship Capital of the World\,” and continued to recall the incredible exploits of Kaiser’s two Portland yards and the Vancouver yard\, “the Escort Carrier Champions\,” until he died in 1996. \nLarry’s widow gave Peter her husband’s archives but it was another 20 years before he finally began to seriously study them with the goal of producing a book to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the war in 2020. This is the first book to review the region’s forgotten history of wartime shipbuilding\, which employed over 180\,000 people—30\,000 of them women who were trained in a few weeks to become welders\, machinists\, electricians etc. \n“Liberty Factory: A Look at the Kaiser Shipyards” is part of the CCHM’s ongoing Speaker Series\, which features talks by local historians\, authors\, and experts on a variety of topics related to Clark County history. \nThe CCHM Speaker Series is presented by the Clark County Historic Preservation Commission. This month’s presentation is sponsored by the Building Industry Association. All proceeds will go to the Women’s Educational Scholarships Program. The event will occur in person at the Clark County Historical Museum (1511 Main Street\, Vancouver\, WA 98660). Doors open at 5:15 p.m. and the presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. \nClick this link to purchase tickets – An Evening with Pat \nRenown local historian\, Pat Jollota\, will guide the audience through the trials and tribulations surrounding the development of Vancouver. From the early endeavors to bring a railway to the burgeoning town to the numerous battles over bridging the Columbia River. Jollota’s encyclopedia knowledge of our area’s history and expert and often humorous oration style will make for an evening not to be missed. \nWhen one thinks of history in Clark County the first person who comes to mind is Pat Jollota. Pat has devoted decades of her life to gathering\, saving\, and sharing the stories of Vancouver\, Washington\, and Clark County. \nPat arrived in Vancouver in 1982. In that same year\, she started her 18-year career at the Clark County Historical Museum. In her roles as curator at the Museum\, Pat would spend innumerable hours reading through the Columbian newspaper\, hearing the stories of guests to the research library\, and telling newly uncovered stories of Clark County. She started writing down the history of Clark County in the pages of the Clark County historical Museum’s annual\, Clark County History. However\, her first book Naming Clark County was an immediate hit. To this day\, Naming Clark County is one of the most popular local books available. \nSince then\, Pat’s authorship of local history has been prolific\, writing Darkness Next Door\, Downtown Vancouver\, Camas\, Legendary Locals of Vancouver\, Vanishing Vancouver\, The Murder of Joanne Dewey in Vancouver\, Washington\, and Haunted Vancouver Washington. The Marine reservists came from all over Washington State: Bremerton\, Kent\, Woodinville\, Spokane\, Yakima\, Vancouver\, and all points of the compass. They spent three weeks training on new equipment\, went to Saudi Arabia where they led the liberation of Kuwait\, and a few weeks later returned to assume their civilian occupations. They were truly “citizen-soldiers.” \nJeff Dacus (MSgt. USMC ret.) is former teacher\, author\, speaker\, and historian. He has written three books\, Desert Storm Marines: A Marine Tank Company in the Gulf\, Fighting Corsairs: The Men of Marine Fighting Squadron\, and Perceptions of Battle: Washington’s Victory at Monmouth. \nThis event is free to the public. Co-written with Gloria Brown\, the book details Brown’s journey from an agency transcriptionist with the US Forest Service in D.C. to becoming the first African American woman to attain the rank of forest supervisor for the agency. \n“Gloria’s journey from a young widow and East Coast city girl to western forester and agency leader pulls together unexpected threads of African American\, environmental\, and Northwest history. Most importantly\, it is an inspiring story with lessons about overcoming challenges\, self-advocacy\, determination\, and putting dreams into action. I was honored to write Black Woman in Green with Gloria and am excited to share her story with the Clark County community.” \nDr. Donna Sinclair is a historian and scholar specializing in oral history and the history of the Pacific Northwest. Sinclair holds a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University – Vancouver as well as a Master’s in History and Ph.D. in Urban Studies from Portland State University. She teaches as an adjunct for Washington State University Vancouver and Western Oregon University\, served on the Washougal Planning Commission in 2017\, and is on the Washougal School Board of Directors. \nThe CCHM Speaker Series is presented by the Clark County Historic Preservation Commission.
