SUMMARY:I am Also Entitled to be Recognized: The Journey of Moses Williams\, Buffalo Soldier
DESCRIPTION:Clark County Historical Museum kicks off its 2023 History on Tap season at the Kiggins Theatre on Thursday\, Apr. 20\, 2023 with historian Gregory P. Shine presenting “I am Also Entitled to be Recognized: The Journey of Moses Williams\, Buffalo Soldier.” The program will explore the life\, military service\, and Pacific Northwest connections of Sgt. Moses Williams – a decorated Buffalo Soldier and Medal of Honor recipient – and share new research that sheds light on key turning points in Williams’ fascinating life. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. and the event begins at 7 p.m. \nWilliams\, a nineteenth century U.S. Army soldier who served in the Ninth U.S. Cavalry – one of four all-African American regiments known as Buffalo Soldiers – and at several western posts as an ordnance sergeant\, is buried in the Vancouver Barracks post cemetery. As Shine’s program will illustrate\, Williams’ journey from rural Louisiana\, through assignments at remote forts in Texas\, Oklahoma\, New Mexico\, Arizona\, Colorado\, Nebraska\, and Oregon\, reveals much about the history of the American West. \nGregory P. Shine is a historian\, writer and educator who has been connecting people to the history of the American West for over 30 years. Throughout his career\, Greg has worked for the U.S. National Park Service – including 14 years locally as the chief ranger and historian at Fort Vancouver N.H.S. – and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management\, where he currently leads the agency’s national Interpretation program. Greg also taught history at Portland State University for nearly a decade. An active community volunteer\, he is a longstanding member of the editorial board of the Oregon Encyclopedia\, a project of the Oregon Historical Society. Greg is a popular speaker on topics related to Pacific Northwest history and has appeared on episodes of PBS’s History Detectives and OPB’s Oregon Experience. Most recently\, Greg was a consulting historian to the documentary film Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts. \nBefore the main event\, see if you can figure out which tidbits of history are true and which ones are fake in our newest segment\, “A History and A Lie”. DESCRIPTION:The Clark County Historical Museum (CCHM) will open its 2022 History on Tap Season with “Pat Jollota: A Retrospective” at the Kiggins Theatre on April 21. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event begins at 7 p.m. \nNow entering its fourth season\, History on Tap looks at how the past influences our present and informs the future. It’s built on the premise that history didn’t end on some dusty date on the calendar but is a dynamic story where every person is an active participant. In this year’s opening event\, CCHM is excited to sit down with beloved local author and historian\, Pat Jollota\, to discuss her life and work. \nPat Jollota moved to Vancouver after retiring from the Los Angeles Police Department. A lover of history\, Jollota has since devoted her life to unearthing and preserving our community’s stories while continuing her passion for civic engagement and advocacy. In addition to serving at the Clark County Historical Museum for 22 years. She served on the Vancouver City Council for 20 years\, helped establish the Children’s Justice Center\, and served on countless civic organizations. Her advocacy and dedication earned her recognition as Clark County’s First Citizen for 2012. She is also the author of 8 books exploring Clark County’s history – including her newest one\, Haunted Vancouver\, Washington (September 2020). \nThe evening will include our newest segment One History and a Lie\, where audience members try to figure out which tidbits of history are true and which ones are fake. We’re also bringing back the popular Clark County Trivia with a twist!
